The Economics Depend on Your Utility
If your utility offers favorable net metering, exported solar already earns you full credit, and a battery adds cost without much extra savings. Batteries make stronger financial sense where net metering is limited, where rates change by time of day, or where you are billed high demand charges. In those cases, storing cheap energy to use during expensive hours can move the needle.

Be honest about capacity, too. A typical home battery covers essential loads for a limited stretch, not unlimited whole-home power for days. Sizing it to your true backup needs keeps the cost reasonable.
Before You Commit
Battery payback on economics alone often stretches long, sometimes beyond a decade, so factor in warranty length and expected cycle life. Federal and state incentives can improve the math significantly, but terms change, so confirm current programs before signing.
Get itemized quotes from a few installers that separate the battery, inverter, and labor. Ask how the system behaves during an outage and how many years the warranty covers, then compare those numbers against what you actually expect to save.
